Thatching

Thatching the yard!

So...curiosity killed the cat. Our neighbor began working on his lawn last Monday night with a contraption that I had not seen before. I went over and found out he was using a "power rake" or "thatcher" to pull the dead grass up out of the yard. He then volunteered it for me to use after he was done. Knowing the need for such a contraption on our lawn, I accepted; not realizing that it would consume the next 2 nights and leave me exhausted.

I had no idea that I would fill the yard waste can to capacity, as well as put a heaping pile of dead grass in the back of my truck. I was blown away by how much there was. It's safe to assume that no one had thatched this lawn for 10 years or more (that's what I felt like at least).

Luckily, I had a wonderful helper who had her own little rake. She was busy either raking the grass out of the piles I made, or playing in the piles like they were leaves. Moral of the story is don't go ask your neighbor about some new contraption he is using on his yard.

One more little picture...

Our friends - Blayne, Rachel, and Darek - were passing through town and stopped to visit for a litte while. It was fun to see them again.

Jared, that is incredible!!!

Melissa, ingenious...love the idea. Oddly enough I was contemplating this exact problem yesterday evening!

So does the yard look better now, or was it all in vain?

I can only imagine the kind of people that are going to wander over to your blog now when they google "naked day"

I try this every day. It cuts back on laundry a lot! Of course there are other things to wash besides clothes. My problem is, after a month of staying home naked, we all decided to get out and realized that Ryan's and Michelle's clothes didn't fit them anymore. My question is, do I go buy them more clothes? If we continue to have naked days, then that would really just be a waste of money. I don't know.

I usually end up taking conversation too far, not that I did this time, but just in case: Melissa started it!

Hey we have a naked day every other day so that I don't have a lot of laundry to do ever! haha
Hey was that thatching contraption worth it? I think that our lawn is in desperate need of something like that but I wanted to get your opinion on whether or not the work was worth it. Let me know!

That was an amazing amount of dead grass...it would have taken us forever!

I agreex100 about cheap detergent. I ALWAYS buy Tide. I never try generic anymore and last month thought I'd give Gain a shot since it's cheaper, but the smell was...gross. I spend a lot of time thinking about the clothes I'll miss the least and wearing those on laundry days. I just plan on not seeing them again for awhile. :) I would totally vote for naked days, but I think Chad would veto it. Have you seen the Seinfeld episode?

Poor Jared! At least he had a very good little helper!! I hate it when Dad does our lawn. It always leaves it looking dead for a week or so.
I also agree with the brand name laundry soap. It ruins clothes. Not worth the savings!
Interesting idea, the naked day. I have to question Amy's comment though. I have a feeling Chad would LOVE having Amy run around in the buff all day!

I love the idea!!! Let me know what Jared thinks. I feel like even if I can get all the laundry done then Bradley always has a huge accident or something.

On laundry soap, I love Arm and Hammer. I acutally use the powder it is cheaper than the liquid and it even gets our whites really clean.

I'm all for naked day however, I don't know how well it would go over at work. That only leaves Saturday or Sunday and I'm pretty sure I'd get in trouble at church. Hmmm... I hope the neighbors don't mind as I'm doing yard work on Saturdays.

About the thatching, we only did it a week ago so we haven't seen a difference yet. However, that much grass on any yard can't be good, and this is suppose to help get more water into the ground. We'll keep you updated in the future.

your piles of grass leave me speechless... i honestly have nothing to say but WOW. kudos to you for finishing the job! that's a lot of work & faith for an unknown result... i'll be looking for your updates. :)

laundry is truly never-ending!!!!!!!! your idea is innovative, but Lisa has pointed out some things to ponder. i thin i would rather wash clothes than furniture or carpet or the like. i wonder what naked colonies do. any thoughts?

Way to tag team on the blog! We will have to try that someday. Our lawn probably needs a good thatching, too. I'll have Derek talk to Jared. Thanks for the laundry advice. Most of my family would be happier clothless, anyway. And you've motivated me to pick a good detergent and stick to it - we've always gone the cheapest/on sale route.

I guess the conclusion is, on the naked days we won't be completly naked. We will wear disposable underwear.
